Do you want to know how to draw a scary drawing? Well, what makes a drawing scary? As humans, we seek comfort in the familiar. Our brains are designed to notice when something is “off.” Therefore, whenever we encounter something truly foreign to what we may perceive as “natural,” we automatically begin to feel uncomfortable, even scared.

I always tell my children that if there is something that scares them, they should learn more about it. Whether that scary thing is their classmate’s odd habits, or the structure of the roaches that crawl in the walls, challenging ourselves to understand the nature of something that is different is a key way to make it less scary.

So, if you are trying to create something that is scary in your art, the best way to go about it is to create something that will make your viewer uncomfortable by its very oddness, its very differentness if you will. Here are some tricks to make that happen.

How to draw a Scary Drawing in 3 easy steps

Use unnatural distortion to make your drawing feel wrong

An easy way to create a scary feeling of “wrongness” in your drawing is to take an ordinary object and distort it in an unnatural way. Think of the abnormally long fingers of the creepypasta Slenderman or Nosferatu. Our minds recognize when something is mostly normal, but just a little bit off, so that we can recognize the wolf in sheep’s clothing, so to speak.

Remove or change facial features to make your drawing feel creepy

Pivoting off of the distortion concept, you can easily draw something scary by removing parts of an object, or putting them somewhere where they usually wouldn’t be found. For instance, consider the Pale Man from Pan’s Labyrinth. Or recall the Doctor Who episode “The Idiot’s Lantern.” In each of these instances, the artists have removed pieces of the characters’ faces, placed them elsewhere, or entirely erased them. It makes for some pretty creepy feels.

Poster of Nosferatu by By logan81 on Adobe Stock

Use disparate meshing to make your drawing feel uncomfortably monstrous

Finally, meshing two disparate things together really rubs us the wrong way as humans. We’re uncomfortable when we see the discarded clones of Ripley in Alien: Resurrection. Or when we see the spliced together side show gaffs of carnivals long past.

The classic drawing party game Exquisite Corpse creates a scary result by default because contributors don’t have a clue what the previous person has drawn. It reminds us of the age-old warning not to play God. Not to make new life. Not to Frankenstein things together, lest we get a monster.

Combine these 3 drawing concepts to draw something scary

Throw these three principles together. Then, add some teeth, some smoke, and some other classically scary items, and you have yourself a frightening image.

If you follow this tutorial, please share your results with us! We’d love it if you posted the scary things you draw in our Facebook group. Don’t miss our other tutorial on how to draw a haunted house, which we have a video for as well. Sweet dreams!

Did you know that bathrooms could be the most haunted place in your home? Not the attic, not the basement, not even that creepy kitchen. So why are so many bathrooms haunted? Is your house’s bathroom haunted?

In this process drawing video, we’ll explain why bathrooms may the place where you’ll most likely see a ghost. Bathroom ghosts appear in folklore from all over the world. For instance, think of Bloody Mary or Hanako-san. They appear in quite a few of our episodes as well. Our guests the Haunted Housewives describe a ghost that comes up the drain, and we ourselves have had plenty of unusual experiences in our own haunted bathrooms.

Check out the video to see some of the psychological and metaphysical reasons your bathroom may have ghosts!

Let us know if you, too, have a bathroom ghost story! Comment on our YouTube channel or in our Facebook group.

The show’s irreverent hosts in front of several highly haunted toilets

Can you think of other reasons your bathroom may be full of ghosts? Maybe people tend to die in bathrooms? Or, perhaps, ghosts just really like relaxing in a hot bath. Reach out and let us know what you think! We’d love to know how to close that trans-dimensional portal next to our toilet.

If you like real ghost stories, you’ll enjoy watching us as we contact the spirits haunting Becky’s workplace using a spirit board. Converted from a home built in 1813, this office is full of ghosts, and ghost stories. When our friend Jennifer (guest from Episode 2 and a Patreon Episode) spent time in this office, a ghost followed her home! In this video, she gives a little background into that story, as well as information on where this old-fashioned spirit board was purchased. And then, in the spirit of the real ghost stories we like to tell, we contacted this spirit—and other ghosts—using the board.

It’s a long video, so here are a few things of note in case you don’t get to finish it:

Several guests who watched this live heard the voices of women and children who were trying to talk over a man who was trying to keep them quiet. Do you hear these voices? Some people do, some people don’t.

We had a hard time getting specific names when we asked, but some of the same letters kept appearing. Afterward, we determined this was because there were so many spirits trying to talk to us and they were likely fighting over control of the planchette.

If you listen closely, you can hear someone whisper the name “Purdue” at around the 33:55 mark as we’re trying to figure out names.

We did get some very clear answers that scared the sh*t out of us! Watch us as we totally freak out!

Why do we associate haunted houses and the scariest ghost stories with Victorian architecture? Is it something cultural, or are these intricate structures more prone to holding onto their ghosts, and scary ghost stories that come along with them? We put together an informative video that answers these questions while showing the process of drawing a Victorian home.
