Show Notes Exploring Illinois’ Haunted Cemeteries and More

What are Mandela effects?

The human memory is quite flawed, and we often remember things very differently from how they happened. For example, you’ve probably noticed how Diana misquotes just about everybody on the show. When one person convinces another to believe their false or delusional memories, it’s called a folie à deux. But what about when many people who have never met seem to share the same false memory? When many unrelated people remember a certain event happening a specific way, but it never actually happened, that’s a Mandela effect. Similarly, when many people recall seeing a specific detail about something that’s actually false.

The simplest way to define a Mandela effect is as a collective false memory. The term was coined by author and ghost hunter Fiona Broome, after a group of presenters at DragonCon agreed they could recall the funeral of Nelson Mandela being televised in the 1990’s, when in fact president Mandela died in 2013. She was intrigued enough to found and manage a website dedicated to the phenomenon, mandelaeffect.com. Over the years, her website collected about 15 books worth of recountings of these collective distorted memories.

Where are these haunted cemeteries Abby is investigating around Illinois?

Bloods Point Cemetery in Boone County, IL.

Moon Point Cemetery in Cedar Point, IL, where the Witch’s Circle is.

St. Omer Cemetery in Arcola, IL, where she visited The Witch’s Grave.

Bachelor’s Grove of Chicago, the most haunted cemetery in IL (or maybe the country?).

Would you visit these haunted cemeteries in Illinois?

What is your favorite cemetery? Should we make a special trip just to visit haunted Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery since Becky was too chicken when she lived in Illinois? If we do, we’ll likely have quite a spooky day.

Allison has a plethora of true ghost stories from haunted places in Chicago she lived at, and what she’s about to share with you on this spooky ghost streaming podcast will send chills down your spine.

Listen right here:

About the Guest: Allison

Some people call it “The Gift.” Others call it mediumship, sensitivity, or “being open.” However you call that ability to see those things that most people can’t see, one thing is for sure—it’s a gift that’s really hard to get rid of. Our guest, Allison, learned the hard way that she can’t run away from the strange things haunting her home, because they seem to always find her, no matter where she goes.

Allison, our storyteller for Episode 66 and a valued patron of our show

Our episode begins with Allison’s childhood home, a multi-generational, haunted greystone building in Logan Square, Chicago. Once Allison moved across the street to another building, she found a whole new set of ghosts waiting for her there. But what was most surprising was when Allison learned her parents knew all about her abilities because of things that happened before she could remember.

In fact, as a young adult, Allison toured a new house in Norwood Park, and she just knew something was wrong with the place. Her fears were validated when her parents told her they took her to that haunted Chicago house as a “test” of her sensitivity to ghosts.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of this episode. To hear all the true Chicago ghost stories that Allison has to share, you’ll just have to listen to the episode.

Haunted Places Outside of Chicago Mentioned in this Episode

Seeing Einburgh Vaults, AKA the Scottish Catacombs

The Edinburgh Vaults are the most haunted location in Scotland. In these spooky catacombs, our guest Allison encountered a half-body apparition of the famous Mr. Boots, who is also encountered in a Ghost Adventures episode.

The famous and mystical Calton Hill in Edinburgh is also the location of the Samhain Fire Festival. This festival is returning for the first time since before the pandemic in October, 2021.

A Childhood Visit to Auschwitz

Allison describes the awful feeling she experienced when, at age 11, she took a summer trip to Poland and toured Auschwitz. Her experiences are similar to the scary ghost stories of our guest and spiritual medium Annie Larson from Episode 56.

What does it mean when proximity to a specific place causes physical symptoms to manifest? There are many blog posts available that state people will often experience intense headaches or migraines when they go through a spiritual awakening.

In other words, when someone who is sensitive to spiritual energy comes in contact with an abundance of that energy, their crown chakra will go on overdrive (or third eye chakra or root chakra, depending on who you ask). Headaches ensue as a result of that energy overload.

That may be one explanation. Or, perhaps Allison and others like her can empathically sense the stress and anguish of the trapped souls in an area, leading to physical symptoms? What do you think really happened on that day long ago in Poland? Either way, just thinking about it might cause you to have a spooky day!

Fellow podcaster Katie Groves talks about the spooky jerk ghost that came to stay with her after she accidentally haunted her own house.

Listen right here.

Episode Summary

One night, 6 teen girls in Cookville, Tennessee, break out the Ouija board as a fun party trick. What ensues is far, far less fun. Not long after that, the doors in Katie’s house start opening on their own. At first, the scary happenings only occurred in her dad’s absence, while Katie was alone. But eventually he…and others…also witnessed some truly terrifying things.

Then, just when it’s been quiet long enough that everyone thinks the haunting is dormant, Katie starts recording a spooky podcast in the house. You can probably guess what happened next.

Episode Promo

Our episode promo is from 3 Spooked Girls, another spooky podcast that we love!

About the Guest: Katie Groves

Katie co-hosts another spooky podcast called Haunt Her? I Barely Know Her! On the show, she and her co-host Zoe Knowlton take turns telling each other scary stories…sound familiar??? Also like Homespun Haints, their content is tinged with Southern motifs, as the hosts grew up in Central Tennessee. Also like us, they’re using their advanced STEM educations to bring you paranormal entertainment. Do you really need me to go on? Go check them out already!

And since this episode aired, Katie has joined us on a few different platforms, her stories are that good.

Can fighting family members cause a haunting?

Prickly interactions between a teenager and a parent are more normal than paranormal. But when there’s sincere negative energy between the generations, could that be enough to conjure whatever it was that Katie and her dad witnessed in their haunted house? Stay tuned for our follow-up Patreon episode to learn more about the family demons manifested in this episode.

There’s a MANUAL for Ouiji boards?!

Oh dear. We’ve used a Ouija board so many times…we had no idea there was an instruction manual. Here are the most recent instructions, according to Hasbro. The wikiHow community has a little more detail, in their always-making-the-bizarre-banal candor.

And, if you’re curious how these strange devices work (scientifically speaking), here’s a little video we put together:

This spooky podcast episode has time travel!

Apparently, bathrooms are a hot spot for hauntings and paranormal activity. Why? Well, no one (not even the experts) that we’ve talked to seem to have a definitive answer, but there are a lot of theories. We’ve compiled them together and created a great video to explain it all here. Also, learn more about Diana’s other haunted bathroom experiences in last season’s episode Teleporting with Toilets.

Until next time, have a spooky day!

Converted from a home built in 1813, this office is full of ghosts, and ghost stories. When our friend Jennifer (guest from Episode 2 and a Patreon Episode) spent time in this office, a ghost followed her home! In this video, she gives a little background into that story, as well as information on where this old-fashioned spirit board was purchased. And then, in the spirit of the real ghost stories we like to tell, we contacted this spirit—and other ghosts—using the board.

It’s a long video, so here are a few things of note in case you don’t get to finish it:

Several guests who watched this live heard the voices of women and children who were trying to talk over a man who was trying to keep them quiet. Do you hear these voices? Some people do, some people don’t.

We had a hard time getting specific names when we asked, but some of the same letters kept appearing. Afterward, we determined this was because there were so many spirits trying to talk to us and they were likely fighting over control of the planchette.

If you listen closely, you can hear someone whisper the name “Purdue” at around the 33:55 mark as we’re trying to figure out names.

We did get some very clear answers that scared the sh*t out of us! Watch us as we totally freak out!
