Inspirited Dolls: Haunted, Portals, or Loved?

Heather went over some misconceptions that pop culture has about possessed dolls. Even haunted dolls don’t hop off the shelf and roam your basement at night. Heather says they’re more like doorways—little portals that let spirits pop in and out of our realm. Diana conceptualizes it this way: spirits must inhabit dolls so they can have the experience of being spoken to as if they were a living person for the first time in a long time, even if just from children. And yet, Heather’s prized (and notably creepy) 1880s German “Peekaboo” doll illustrates the Japanese sentiment that a century of love can, perhaps, give a doll its own soul.

With a personal brood of 1,500-plus antique toys, Heather has seen it all. She can differentiate between inspirited dolls steeped in decades of human emotion and ensouled dolls that anchor one particular spirit, and she can describe how they’re in a totally different category than evil haunted dolls.

Mary the Doll

Mary lived tucked behind the Xbox for a while, and the Forza Horizon 5 steering wheel would start turning even when the console was powered down. They chalked it up to calibration updates—until the wheel fell silent the very night Mary was moved to a different room.

Haunted Bars in The French Quarter

Jennifer told us a story about her experience at The Morgue Bar in the French Quarter. The Morgue Bar used to be located at 626 St. Philip Street in New Orleans. The building served as a morgue during the yellow fever epidemic in the 1850s. In the Summer of 1853, nearly 1/5th of the city’s population suffered and died from the disease.

The Morgue Bar

The same building later became The Morgue Bar & Lounge. Not just named for it’s previous use, the bar was wholly morgue-themed, embracing its macabre history, as New Orleans tends to do. During its operation as a bar, patrons and staff often reported strange occurrences, such as refrigerators mysteriously unplugging, and toilets overflowing for no apparent reason.

The Crow Bar

The Morgue Bar was unfortunately more of a tourist spot than a fun place to hang out, although it wasn’t not fun, being surrounded by spooky stuff. At the time, Diana preferred another goth bar just a couple blocks over on Decatur, called The Crow Bar. That one was an actual goth club. A legacy goth club, dating back to the 1980’s. A New Orleans legend, in its own right. So goth, in fact, that when they offered free admission on Halloween night to patrons in costume, Diana’s costume (as the character Death from The Sandman comic) was deemed too pedestrian, so she had to pay a cover.

In an interesting bit of French Quarter goth trivia, the former owner of The Morgue actually purchased The Crow Bar, and renamed it The Whirling Dervish.

Haunted Nottoway Plantation

Today’s guest also had a personal story from when she visited Nottoway Plantation in her youth. Nottoway, the largest antebellum plantation mansion in the South, is notably haunted. The most well-known ghost is called Miss Josephine. She’s suspected to be one of the daughters of the original owner, John Randolph. In life, Josephine never married, and remained at Nottoway until her death. Visitors and staff hear her footsteps, and catch glimpses of a figure in a white gown.

The Louisiana plantation is so haunted, it was featured on Discovery Channel’s “Ghost Lab.” Fortunately, most of the property’s spirits are friendly. Well, friendly to adults, at least. Perhaps young Jennifer’s admittedly bratty behavior was just enough to send Miss Josephine over the edge.

After leaving insanely haunted New Orleans to end up in slightly less haunted Texas, for the first time Jennifer didn’t feel constantly haunted. She must’ve missed that feeling, as she sought out local ghostly tourism opportunities. Becky and Diana’s Recipe for Lazy Haint Spray

Gaaranteed to at least temporarily remove lazy haints out from under your sofa. Feel free to make your own from the following recipe, so that your home also smells fresh and unhainted!

Lazy Haint Spritz Spray Recipe:

• 8 tsp filtered water
• 2 tsp of rubbing alcohol, witch hazel in alcohol, or bathtub gin.
• 10 drops of lemon essential oil
• 10 drops of sage essential oil
• 10 drops of rosemary essential oil

Add all ingredients to a glass spritz bottle or a very well cleaned out old empty Windex bottle.

Make it a cute label so you don’t get it confused with your Spirit Summoning Spray. That would be a hot mess.

Is the Key West Shipwreck Museum Haunted?

In today’s episode, Nixie tells us her first-hand account of this haunted stop on her Key West ghost tour. Wreckers, or individuals who would dive down to Salvage materials from shipwrecks, were once a major part of the island’s economy.

Interestingly, the basement of the museum is now a theater, used to be a morgue. An underground, below sea level morgue. Eew.

The Cursed Silver Bar

Nixie saw the same full-body apparition walk by the supposedly cursed silver bar at the Key West Shipwreck Museum at least twice. They actually caught a spirit called Daddy Long Legs on video.

The bar has a complex and sordid reputation on the island. Becky wouldn’t even touch the silver bar. Nixie HAS TO touch the bar for her job, so she tells herself, “it’s only dangerous when wet.”

The museum credits the bar with being associated with 6 distinct shipwrecks. Causation aside, what are the odds that all 6 ships that attempted to transport this bar of silver over the water ended up at the bottom of the sea? The only way the bar eventually made it safely to shore was to drag it underwater all the way to land.

How to Safely Take Photos of Robert the Doll Without Getting Cursed

Nixie tells us that, if you want to take a picture Robert the Doll, you must follow three rules, or else you may be cursed.

Robert’s Rules of Disorder

• Politely greet Robert the Doll,
• Respectfully ask permission to take his photo,
• Politely say goodbye to Robert. A “thank you” wouldn’t hurt, either.

This whole practice might seem like hyped-up superstition, as most tourists blithely ignore all posted signage to do as they please. Surely the hundreds of tourists who visit the museum every year and take Robert the Doll’s photograph without following all three rules aren’t all cursed, are they?

Well, it would seem that yes, they are. People who don’t follow the rules while taking aphotograph of Robert the Doll end up regretting it later, when the bad luck starts. So many people, in fact, that the museum receives over 1000 apology letters annually. A staff member apparently has to read the apology letter to Robert the Doll aloud to invoke his forgiveness. Then, the staff posts the letters on a wall right next to him. We’re not sure if this is primarily for the doll’s ego, or to serve as a warning to tourists of the future.

The Real Life Corpse Bride Who is NOT Resting in Key West Cemetery

In the Early 1900’s, a young woman on the brink of death went for an xray. The xray tech, Carl Tanzler, saw her, and immediately recognized her as the woman he’d been literally dreaming about. For the rest of her short life, he begged for her hand in marriage, even though both of them were already married. Countless times, Elena turned him down….remember that, it’ll be important later.

Because tuberculosis was basically a death sentence at the time, nobody was shocked when the sick young woman passed away…but at least one person was thrilled with the development. Tanzler (the xray tech, going by Count von Cosel) had more money than Elena’s family, so he built a mausoleum in Key West Cemetery for Elena’s final resting place. Or, semi-final resting place, at least. The “count” visited the mausoleum as often as he could, until one night, he heard her voice, singing a familiar melody. Tanzler saw this as Elena asking him to release her spirit.

Taking the ghostly request way too literally, Tanzler committed what he believed to be the ultimate act of love: graverobbing. Talk about a grand gesture. That’s right—he got over her resisting his advances in life, and decided that he would free her spirit from it’s earthly prison by bringing her corpse home with him to be his bride. Because dead girls can’t say “no”.

Can you intentionally mass-produce haunted objects?

With the number of Etsy listings for a “real haunted dybbuk box” skyrocketing, you can’t blame us for being a little skeptical that these haunted items are really so readily available. In a past episode, Katie told the story of supposedly haunted vodka that was aged near Annabelle the doll. Are these just gimmicks? Or do these shenanigans result in a reliably haunted object? Check out this episode where we explore this topic further.

How to get to know your new tarot cards

Katie never expected to be one of those tarot people who has 3 decks in her purse at all times, just in case. Yet tarot decks can be addictive, and one is rarely enough. Each deck has a different interpretation, and a different meaning. Some even have completely different cards.

Katie’s first deck was the Wild Unknown Tarot, which she calls “a good starter deck.” In this episode, she tells the story of how she bonded with the deck upon bringing it home with her. Becky has also had a strange experience with a new deck speaking to her audibly in the quiet language of shuffling.

Step 1: Introduce yourself to your new tarot deck

You can do this vocally, or with visualization and energy. Maybe flip through the deck. You could pull out the cards you really like the artwork on, or the cards you tend to draw over and over if you’re a seasoned self-reader.

Step 2: Tell the tarot cards your intentions

How do you plan to use the cards? This seems obvious sometimes, but there are probably some specific details you can come up with. Are you using these cards for paid readings? Just for friends? For your own private use? Are you seeking guidance through a current obstacle, to understand someone else’s motivations better, or to divine the future? Are you trying to talk to the deceased? Just want to draw a random card for daily inspiration? Explaining this to the deck might help with the next step, in which you can determine if this is the right choice for your needs.

Step 3: Do a reading only about the tarot deck

Allow it to tell you what it’s intentions are. Try asking aloud, “tell me about you, what I should expect from using this deck, and how would you prefer to be used?” This reading will be only about the deck and how it intends to interact with you on an ongoing basis.

If the reading is extra salty, maybe use a different deck when you’re feeling moody and vulnerable. Or, if the reading is obtuse and vague, maybe use a different deck when you need a quick, straightforward answer. And if the reading is super poignant, informative, interesting, and helpful, use this deck all the time! We all need more of these types of readings in our lives.

Step 4: Sleep with the new tarot deck under your pillow

Unless you find that uncomfortable; then sleep with the cards under your bed. You may just have a dream about how bonding with your new tarot cards is going to go.

What is an EVP?

In this case, the acronym EVP stands for electronic voice phenomena (or Elk Valley Paranormal, in other cases). Sometimes, recording equipment will pick up something that sounds like a spoken word or phrase, when no audible words are being spoken in the room where the recording is taking place. Often these messages are too quiet to hear until you turn up the volume.

Are EVP real? Are these actual messages from another realm? Could they be the quiet voices of spirits, amplified by technology? Or are we just hearing what we want to hear within the white noise? After listening to Cyn’s EVP collection, we’re pretty convinced these are actual voices. But whose voices are they?

How to get a good electronic voice phenomenon recording

• Wondering what EVP questions to ask? Try asking direct, open ended questions, but not leading questions.
• If you know a name associated with the location, use it! Try asking if that person is present. Direct your question to that person, addressing them by name.
• Leave plenty of time after asking your question. Remember, you can’t hear an EVP in real time, so you just have to trust something might be happening and keep recording the silence.
• Eliminate sources of background noise, and make sure nobody is speaking in another room while you’re recording.
• Use reliable EVP technology; something that picks up very quiet sounds.
• If you’re using something that records onto physical medium, like a cassette tape, never reuse a tape. Old recordings may not be 100% gone after being dubbed over.

How to protect your empathic self

Cyn gave us some tips for empaths doing paranormal investigations.

• Countdown meditation.
• Opening and closing prayer.
• Always close any kind of questioning by saying goodbye, otherwise the door stays open.
• Essential oils: lavender for anxiety, peach for interrupting an anxious event.
• Crystals, which can be cleansed with moonlight or sage smoke.
• Smoke from burning sage creates a barrier for spirits and ill intent, which you can draw then step over.

Nothing is more terrifying than Christmas. For Samantha, this darkest time of year brings objects moving on their own, phantoms banging on the walls, and a particular Christmas doll that wrecks untold havoc.

The Haunted Santa

Our guest, Samantha, graciously pulled this haunted little guy out of storage so you could have these photos. She actually did it twice because, well, the first time all the photos mysteriously went missing.

Kitty Kitty Kittens!

If you’re our age, we are guessing you remember the exuberant commercials for this adorable Tyco toy. This stuffed kitten doll made the top of Diana’s Christmas list, and when she unwrapped it she fell in love scary fast. Unlike all her other kitten dolls, this one purred! But it wasn’t electronic. It had a marble in its head. So as you tilted the toy back and forth, the marble rattled around to mimic a purring sound. Swoon! Hey, it was simpler times. Diana’s Kitty Kitty Kitten was the himalayan cat one, and she named it Sushi.

What is Parasomnia

We’ve talked to several people with parasomnias. Parasomnia describes something that you do involuntarily while sleeping. Aside from the classic, ever-spooky sleep paralysis, examples of parasomnias include things like night terrors, somnambulism (sleepwalking), severe nightmares, talking in your sleep, and sleep-related abnormal eating.

Should you make friends with a haunted doll?

Samantha’s guests ask her why she keeps moving the creepy Santa doll in her bathroom…but she isn’t. She can’t get rid of the doll, since her mom would object. She tried placating him with a snack, which usually seems to work with Santa Claus…thus the milk and cookies, right? But nothing seemed to help quell the doll’s creepy behavior until she made friends with it. But there’s one thing Samantha’s sure of; she’s not going to let it terrorize the next generation of her family. Becky has a little too much experience making friends with haunted dolls. People are constantly giving them to her against her wishes. Fortunately, she’s been a lot less possessed since she no longer possesses any more possessed dolls…because she’s selling these haunted dolls on Etsy now, so you can possess them!

This scary Christmas story episode made us want to be nice

…But we are probably going to be naughty despite our best efforts. After all, we can’t seem to stop attracting haunted dolls. But you, dear Hainted Loves, you still have potential. Be good for goodness’ sake, or you’re gonna have a spooky holiday!
